What do admin levels and locality mean?
Understand location levels and how they differ between countries.
Why use these names?
Countries organize their geography differently. We use admin level 1, admin level 2, and locality as consistent search labels, while the options use the local names for your selected country. A county in one country is not necessarily equivalent to a county in another.
What does admin level 1 mean?
The first geographic division below a country. This may be a state, province, territory, or region, depending on the country.
In the United States, this is a state, such as Alabama.
In Canada, this is a province or territory, such as Ontario.
What does admin level 2 mean?
A smaller division within the selected admin level 1. It may be a county, district, or another local administrative area. Names vary by country.
In the United States, this is a county or county equivalent, such as Jefferson County in Alabama.
In Canada, this is a census division, which may be a county, regional municipality, or another regional area.
What does locality mean?
A city, town, village, municipality, or other local place within your selected area. The types of places available vary by country.
For example, Birmingham is a locality in Alabama.
In Canada, localities can be cities, towns, municipalities, or other census subdivisions.
What about the UK and Europe?
There is no single hierarchy used throughout Europe. Countries use different combinations of regions, provinces, departments, districts, municipalities, and settlements. The UK also has different local government structures across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, including counties and unitary authorities.
Use the names offered for your selected country rather than assuming that every country follows the U.S. state → county → city pattern. Available choices depend on coverage.
Do I have to select every level?
No. Choose a business category and country to search the whole country. With a paid plan, you can narrow the search further. Select each parent before the next level becomes available: country → admin level 1 → admin level 2 → locality. You can stop at any level.
For example: United States → Alabama → Jefferson County → Birmingham. Changing a parent clears the selections below it. Some cities cross county boundaries and appear under more than one county; the search stays within the county you selected.
